Hong Kong's surveying profession has a long historical relationship with the United Kingdom. The profession has over 150 years of history in Hong Kong, dating back to 1843 with the arrival of the first Government Surveyor General from the United Kingdom. The first government land auction then took place on 22 January 1844.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Hong Kong Branch) started to operate in 1929. Until 1950, most qualified surveyors were recruited from the United Kingdom, and they were members of the RICS. In the 1960s, the Hong Kong Technical College (now The Hong Kong Polytechnic University) started to deliver diploma courses in surveying. Now there are three local universities offering degree courses in surveying.

HKIS was formally established in April 1984. At that time, the number of founding members was 85, the membership now has grown to over 8000 (of which about 5729 are corporate members). In the early days, the Institute co-tenanted its office with the RICS (Hong Kong Branch), located in a 500 square foot office in Swire House. The first President of the Institute was Mr. F.Y. Kan.

HKIS has been incorporated by the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors Ordinance which was passed in 1990. The Surveyors Registration Ordinance was passed in 1991 to set up a Registration Board to administer the registration of surveyors. After the return of Hong Kong to China's sovereignty in 1997, the RICS (Hong Kong Branch) dissolved on 31 August 1997, and HKIS became the only professional body representing the surveying profession in Hong Kong.

1995	Aug	Enactment of the Land Surveying Ordinance whereby HKIS is stipulated as the consulting body for the issue of the Code of Practice under the Ordinance
1996	Dec	Launch of the HKIS first website
		Elected as a member of International Cost Engineering Council
1997	Sep	HKIS as the sole representative professional body for all professional surveyors practicing in Hong Kong after the dissolution of the RICS (Hong Kong Branch)
	Nov	Entered into a reciprocity agreement with The Singapore Institute of Surveyors and Valuers
1998	Jan	Launch of HKIS and Shanghai Commercial Bank Limited Affinity Card
	Jul	Relocation of HKIS office at Suite 510, 5/F., Jardine House, 1 Connaught Place, Central
	Nov	Entered into a co-operation agreement with the RICS
2001	Jun	Relocation of HKIS office at Suite 801, 8/F., Jardine House, 1 Connaught Place, Central
