HKIS Visit to HKHA MiC Mockup Site for Tung Chung Area 99 Public Housing Development (25 May 2023)
On 25 May, HKIS President Sr Paul Wong led 16 HKIS delegates to visit the Hong Kong Housing Authority's (HKHA) MiC mock-up site at Tung Chung Area 16A. The MiC modules are intended for the construction of Block 5, a 12-storey public housing block at Tung Chung Area 99.

Ir Ben Wat, HKHA's senior structural engineer, described the division of each modular flat into a certain number of precast modules, the challenges of transporting precast modules from the Mainland factory to Tung Chung, and the connections to be done on site. Ir Richard Lee, the general manager of Yau Lee Construction Co, Ltd, explained the development of concrete MiC and the continuous effort to enhance the modules to improve productivity, decrease concrete volume (to make the modules lighter), and increase module strength and integrity.

After a fruitful Q&A session, the delegates gained a new appreciation for the MiC approach which could shorten construction time, and noted that there is a potential for MiC prices to go down when the approach becomes common.
