Message from BSD Chairman (November 2011)

Newly awardees of Distinguish Building Surveyors

On the Conference Dinner held on 22 October 2011, we have our three fellow members, Mr Daniel Ho Chi Wing, Mr Edwin Tang Hoi Kwan and Mr Kenneth Yun Ying Kit, newly elected as Distinguish Building Surveyors. Let me give a brief
introduction on them.

Dr Daniel Ho is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Real Estate and Construction in the University of Hong Kong. He contributes a lot in the academy and plays an important part in cultivating our young building surveyors. He developed his key research interest and achievements in the assessment of building quality and performance more than ten years ago. Besides, he has served in various government committees, councils, and boards of professional institutions.

Edwin Tang currently serves as Senior Building Surveyor in Buildings Department. Edwin has devoted his invaluable time and contributed a lot to the volunteer works in HKIS for over 15 years. He has been our BSD Chairman during Years 2004-2006 and also the Honorable Secretary and Honorable Treasurer of the HKIS in Years 2009-2011 and 1999-2000 respectively. Moreover, he has been member of Board of Professional Development, Board of Membership, Public and Social Affairs Committee and General Council for years.

Kenneth Yun currently serves as Senior Property Services Manager at Architectural Services Department. He has been contributing in BSD for over 10 years. In Years 2008-2010, he was our BSD Chairman and led us going through a challenging and hard period. Apart from the volunteer works in BSD, he paid much on the professional training and development works of probationers.

Their continuous efforts and contributions towards our profession are indisputable and definitely they deserve to receive the honour.

BSD AGM 2011 and Annual Dinner
As per announcement last month, BSD AGM and Annual Dinner will be held on 2 December 2011. Every year, we have election of new office bearers and council members as well as election of members to represent BSD in HKIS General Council. I am delighted that every year, our council members endeavour to promote our profession’s development and the welfare of members. I am prepared to report our BSD’s works done in Year 2010-2011 and brief our plan in the coming year. I look forward to meet old friends and newly qualified members on the AGM and for sure everybody would enjoy a nice dinner on that happy Friday.

Practical task 2011
The Practical Task this year has successfully completed and the presentation has been held on 5 November 2011. The question devised this year demands candidates not only to prepare plan for client’s immediate use, but also to consider scheme for a future conversion proposal which is a challenging task to our candidates. We had 95 candidates attending the Task this year, amongst which 68 are candidates who made the first attempt. The passing rates for first-attempt and re-attempt candidates are 47% and 44% respectively.

Technical Committee on Minor Works
Minor works control system under the Building (Minor Works) Regulations has been implemented for nearly a year. A Technical Committee on Minor Works set up by the Buildings Department has been formed to monitor and review the implementation of the system. Andrew Kung has been nominated to represent BSD in the Technical Committee.

How much do you know about our BSD Council?
I hope our members agree with me that the existence of BSD not only serves to promote the professional development in the society, but also as a bridge amongst our members such that we could play, share and communicate during our leisure time. We have our Social Function and Communication Panel which endeavour to serve the purpose. This year, the Panel has set up a Facebook group for BSD, an interactive platform which can help strengthening the professional network amongst our BS members and encourage them to exchange their views towards hot topics. Moreover, the Panel has successfully organized a dinner gathering on 31 March 2011 with over 30 participants. The Panel is now working hard on their next social function. Please keep an eye on the Surveyors Times.
