Integration Old and New: Innovative Design for the Adaptive Reuse of Heritage Buildings

On 6 June 2014, we invited Dr Lee Ho Yin, Associate Professor in Architectural Conservation at The University of Hong Kong, to deliver a talk on the Adaptive Reuse of Heritage Buildings, which is a conservation approach that brings an older building to the future by giving it a socially relevant new use.

Dr Lee believed it was inevitable for new construction to be added to existing buildings to cater to new uses for which the original building was not designed. He showed us some innovative adaptive reuse designs from around the world in which new additions were seamlessly integrated with the older parts of the buildings. As demonstrated by architect I.M. Pei’s design of the Louvre Pyramid in Paris, the innovative additions to a heritage building may become valued architectural heritage in their own right in the future.
