Event Name : HKIS surveyors in the planning and development markets of Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia: Opportunities and Challenges
CPD Code : Formal Events
Speaker : Dr Guibo Sun
Assistant Professor, Department of Urban Planning and Design
Director, Urban Analytics and Interventions Research Lab
The University of Hong Kong

Guibo’s research focuses on Planning, Transport, and Health. He specialises in developing natural experiments to estimate the causal effects of such interventions on social, economic and health outcomes. In addition, he is working on institutional analysis of the metro infrastructure provision, using the transportation problem as an empirical question to tackle a larger issue in urban governance and to formulate the informal norm of behaviours in institutions through experimental economics. His research established essential urban data, new methodologies and causal evidence to extend the scientific understanding of the outcomes of large-scale transport interventions, contributing to healthy, equitable and adaptive cities.

Guibo’s research has won several prestigious awards, including the US Lincoln Institute China Program International Fellowship in 2023, three academic awards for research excellence from the UK’s Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) in 2019 and 2021, and HKU Research Output Prize in 2021. Moreover, he received Faculty Teaching Award 2022 for my teaching dedication and innovative pedagogy.

The seminar will share our findings from a market research project funded by HKIS PDD. In 2020, HKIS initiated the project to investigate the opportunities and challenges for HKIS surveyors to work within Southeast Asian countries. We employed a mixed-method approach, including desktop research, a questionnaire survey, and semi-structured interviews with individuals who have working experience in Southeast Asian planning and development industries, to gather insights. Our findings have yielded seven strategies aimed at overcoming recognized obstacles and enhancing the capabilities of HKIS surveyors to fully unleash their potential in the planning and development markets of the three case countries: Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia.
