讲师	:	Ir. Dr. LAI Wai-lok, Wallace BSc, PhD, MHKIE Dr. Wallace Lai is the Associate Professor in the Department of Land Surveying and Geomatics of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He teaches and conducts research and consultancy of nondestructive testing, survey and evaluation to investigate unseen underground utility and engineering structures with ground penetrating radar, infrared thermography and acoustic methods. He also designs, builds and operates the first underground utility survey lab in Hong Kong in 2014. Dr. Lai was commissioned in 2019 to design and build a full-scale 25,000 sq.ft. training and research centre (Q-Leak) of underground leak detection and diagnosis. In the utility lab and Q-Leak, he designs blind test and measures cognitive biases in the process of human-machine interaction. Recent interest of Dr. Lai extends to unfold and model the terrain of hidden and lost WWII heritage sites using a range of geo-spatial technologies including air-borne, terrestrial LiDAR and photogrammetry. Dr. KWONG Chi Man PhD, MPhil Cantab, BA (Hons) Dr. KWONG was born and raised in Hong Kong and had completed his doctorate degree in Cambridge, United Kingdom. His interest lies in military history in East Asia. He is currently the Associate Professor in the Department of History of the Hong Kong Baptist University. He is the author of a number of books, including Hongkongers in the British Armed Forces, 1860-1997 (2022, OUP), War and Geopolitics in Interwar Manchuria (2017, Brill), Eastern Fortress: A Military History of Hong Kong, 1840–1970 (2015, HKUP, co-authored). His works can also be found in Modern Asian Studies, Journal of Military History, Journal of Chinese Military History, and War and Society.

详情	:	Starting from the 1840s, Hong Kong had become one of the British strategic outposts and a pivotal port city in Asia. Before the Second World War (1939-1945), the British had built coastal defenses on the Kowloon and Hong Kong Island sides of Victoria Harbour in preparation of a potential Japanese invasion. The fall of Hong Kong marked the beginning of a brutal Japanese occupation known as “the three years and eight months”, that lasted until the end of the war. The experience of Hong Kong during the Second World War is a significant part of the history of city and the world, representing the common sacrifice and suffering of people around the world who once called Hong Kong a home, even temporarily. The team of multi-discipline Geo-project has developed a three-tier geo-spatial and tech-based approach to facilitate archaeological investigation and historical interpretation of WWII in Hong Kong, to help expanding and deepening our understanding of the British and Japanese military works on the hills. Tier 1 (desktop searching the past) starts by Hong Kong Baptist University, where historical texts, old maps, aerial photos, plans of attack and defence, and Google Earth were studied to define regions/points of interest. Tier 2 (airborne LiDAR) involves the adoption of 3D point clouds extracted from the government’s airborne LiDAR ground laser return to develop a digital terrain model (DTM) for geo-registration in a geographic information system (GIS). Tier 3 (field survey and validation for hybrid air–ground 3D modelling of WWII heritages) is the field work, which means a team expedition based on the setting out survey using GNSS-RTK and subsequent ground-based terrestrial/handheld LiDAR scanning after the WWII heritage features were identified in the field.

1.	The registration fee is non-refundable and non-transferrable.
2.	A registration number will be generated for each application. The registration number is unique and non-transferrable. Members cannot proceed to payment if they do not apply the CPD event and obtain the registration number through the HKIS website.
3.	Payment can be made by cheque or by Credit Card (Shanghai Commercial Bank Ltd. / American Express). Cheques should be made payable to “SURVEYORS SERVICES LTD.”. A separate cheque or Credit Card payment instruction form is required for each event/ application. You should write down the registration number and HKIS membership number at the back of your cheque. The HKIS Secretariat will update the payment status and your application will be confirm when HKIS Secretariat receive your payment.
4.	Payment by PayPal is also acceptable. Please register in our web site before the closing date for each event. Please be reminded that if you cannot settle the payment within 7 days from the date the HKIS Secretariat accepted your registration, your registration number will be invalid and your application will be rejected. Your name will not be included in the registration list and you cannot attend the concerned CPD event. (Not applicable for site visit / social event / joint event with other organisation)
5.	An official receipt which must be presented at the event, will be available for downloading from the "CPD Profile" under Members Corners when payment is received.
6.	Incomplete or wrongly completed registration will not be processed.
7.	In the event a Typhoon Signal No. 8 or above or Black Rainstorm Warning is hoisted, the event will be postponed and a new arrangement will be announced. Should the aforesaid warnings be lowered 4 hours before the event, the event will proceed as normal.
8.	If you have not received any reply from HKIS Secretariat within 7 days of the event, you may call the Secretariat at 2526 3679 to check the progress of your registration.
9.	The HKIS reserves the right of final decision and interpretation in the case of any disputes.
