Seismic design procedures in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are implemented to ensure the structural safety of buildings and infrastructure in areas prone to earthquakes.  During two seminars, the speaker will share an overview of the general principles in the said regions with the specific design codes and regulations at the Year 2021 and case studies will be discussed finally.

1. China:

China has its own set of seismic design procedures to ensure the safety of structures in earthquake-prone regions.  The current seismic design code in China is the "Code for Seismic Design of Buildings" (GB 50011-2010) issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.  This code provides guidelines for seismic hazard assessment, site classification, seismic design parameters, structural analysis methods, and design criteria for buildings.  The code considers factors such as the region's seismicity, soil conditions, and the intended use of the structure.

2. Hong Kong:

In Hong Kong, seismic design procedures are outlined in the "Code of Practice for Structural Use of Concrete" and the "Code of Practice for the Structural Use of Steel."  These codes issued by the Buildings Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region provide guidelines for the seismic design of buildings and structures.  The codes address factors such as seismic hazard assessment, site-specific ground motions, structural analysis and design methods, and detailing requirements for seismic resistance. Hong Kong also considers the effects of local soil conditions and other geotechnical factors in seismic design.

3. Taiwan:

Taiwan is located in a seismically active region and has experienced significant earthquakes in the past.  The seismic design procedures in Taiwan are primarily governed by the "Seismic Design Regulations for Buildings" and the "Seismic Design Regulations for Bridges."  These regulations are issued by the Taiwan Buildings and Infrastructure Research Institute (TBIRI) and provide guidelines for the design and construction of structures to withstand seismic forces.  The regulations include provisions for seismic hazard assessment, design ground motions, seismic analysis methods, and design criteria for various types of structures.

It's important to note that these procedures and codes are regularly reviewed and revised to incorporate advancements in seismic engineering research and technology.

Members are recommended to join both seminars in order to equip yourself with better knowledge on seismic design in different geographical location.
