We received sponsorship from 14 Quantity Surveying firms or individual members for the scholarship scheme first launched by QSD last year. Thank you for their continuous support and contributions. Donors of the scholarship were invited to present the prizes to the students, together with the HKIS President and the QSD Chairman. Department heads and teaching staff from the universities witnessed
the ceremony too. Their support to the Institute is one of the key elements for the sustainable development of the profession.

Invitation letters for the sponsorship of this Scholarship Scheme will be issued to Quantity Surveying firms soon. We are glad to have your generous contribution as well as comments on the Sponsorship Scheme, if any. Your participation shall be the essential ingredient of the betterment for the Quantity Surveying profession.

Visit to the Housing Authority QS Association
Eight Council Members visited the QS Association of the Housing Authority on 27 September 2011. About 70 and 200 professional Quantity Surveyors and technical staff members respectively work in the Authority. Mr Lawrence Chung, Chief Quantity Surveyor, introduced the structure of the Quantity Surveying Sections in his opening speech. Mr Chung also shared his experience of participating in the institutional work which his colleagues are encouraged to involve more. Mr Johnny Yung, Chairman of the QS Association, briefed us the composition and activities organized by the QS Association.

Duties of the sub-committees, working groups and task forces under the Quantity Surveying Division are presented under the following agenda items. Members at the meeting are quite interested in the professional development of the Division. The Chairman of the Divisional Education Committee (QSD) Mr Raymond Kam took this opportunity to introduce the revised APC/ATC arrangement subsequent to the passage of the amendment of the Constitution and Bye-laws in the Extraordinary General Meeting few months ago. Members are enthusiastic in learning more about the changes and matters of the Institute and the Division. It is considered that such outreaching activities should be arranged regularly. Last but not the least, I thank the event co-ordinator Mr Patrick Yip for his effort in arranging the visit.

City University of Hong Kong – Information Days
The Chairman of the Division was invited to make presentation at the Information Days on 15 and 16 October 2011. Two batches of secondary students, who are currently studying in Form 6 and Form 7, will enter the University together next year due to the transition of Undergraduate education system under “3-3-4” academic reform. Parents of some overseas students joined the Information Day too. A 20-minute presentation included the introduction of the Quantity Surveying Profession as well as the route to become a Professional Quantity Surveyor. Audiences were presented with the video prepared by the Division. They are interested in the prospect and income of being a quantity surveyor. Audiences are briefed the international connections of the Institute for quantity surveyors working all round the world. The skills and professional knowledge of a quantity surveyor are the international passport.

I was also impressed by the presentations made by two final year students. One of the sharing topics was the working experience of this student in an international quantity surveying firm in Beijing for 6 weeks this summer with a scholarship from this firm. Another sharing topic was the experience of a study tour of all students in the class to Australia for two weeks. I would like to thank Dr Daisy Yeung for her arrangement of the presentation which can help students to understand more about the job nature of quantity surveyors.

Visit to Architectural Services Department Quantity Surveyors’ Association
8 Council Members joined the visit to the Architectural Services Department Quantity Surveyors’ Association (QSA) on 28 October 2011. The Chairman Mr Wong Chi Lok of the QSA together with 15 of his colleagues attended the meeting. The QSA has about 90 professional quantity surveyors as their members. After introducing the members at the meeting by both the chairmen, we started the discussions on the institutional matters. Colleagues of the ArchSD are interested in various topics such as the recent APC/ATC reform, standard of professional fees and recent professional development in the Mainland. Our Chairman of the Divisional Education Committee took this opportunity to further explore the existing situation of the potential members.

We had a chat with Ms Sheron Li, Assistant Director (Quantity Surveying) of ArchSD, at her office after the meeting. It is mutually agreed that collaboration between the Department and Institute should be kept on and further developed in different areas of the Profession. We also appealed for more support and participation, which are considered as the most valuable resources to the Institute and the profession, from colleagues of ArchSD in the institutional activities and affairs. Thank Mr Wong Chi Lok for arranging the meeting
