Message from QSD Chairman (March 2011)

Newly Elected Members Welcoming Party Congratulation to all the newly elected QSD members. On a Friday night a gentle winter breeze, at the roof top owning a magnificent view, QSD organized a party to meet the newly qualified QS on 25 February 2011. The party was held at the Habitat Lounge in Wanchai. The QSD council members are glad to meet with all the young and fresh faces in this casual and jovial event. We have taken this great opportunity to get to know the new members as well as introducing the different subcommittees in the QS Divisional Council to them. We are also grateful to have Mr Peter Wong, our President of the Institute to attend the event and give us a special speech. Mr Wong told the newly elected members that ethical commitment is one of the crucial integrities of professionals. A very special moment this year was the gathering of membership submission and the signing of application forms which gave the council members an excellent way to reach out to the young and talented and vice versa. In order to facilitate the submission of the application form before the cheduled meeting of the Board of Membership, the participants could find the council members as proposers for application for membership. Some party games were organized and everybody blended-in and has much laughter. The party ended at around 9:30 pm. I hope the newly elected members can contribute more to the Institute and the Division. The success and future development of the Institute as well as the profession are in your hand. Special thanks to the welcoming party organizing committee chaired by Ms Tzena Wong, all the new qualified QS with their spouses, friends and family, our council members who mingled together creating a spectacular and enjoyable evening. We look forward to the QSD Annual Dinner in June for another opportunity to gather and share the joyful time with all of you. Visit to a QSD Member The QSD Council arranged a visit to Mr Kelvin Kwong who now stays at PLK Y C Cheng Centre (保良局鄭翼之中心) at Tai Wai, Shatin on 26 March 2011. Mr Kwong suffered from spinocerebellar ataxia (脊髓小腦萎縮症) and has been staying at care centre for more than a year. It took about 10 minutes travel from Tai Wai MTRC Station to the Centre by shuttle bus. Mr Kwong cannot take care of himself and need special care by the staff at the Centre. Mr Kwong worked in the Housing Department before his resignation due to his illness few years ago. His wife visits him everyday and she told us that Mr Kwong can receive better care at the Centre than previously in the hospital. Mr Kwong sat on the wheelchair particularly designed for him. There is a meeting room downstairs and we met Mr Kwong there for about an hour. We would send our regard to his wife and son. Best wishes! The six council members visited Mr Kwong included Mr Thomas Ho, Mr KC Tang, Mr Ricky Chan, Mr Patrick Yip, Ms Sandy Lui and myself. Some of them are Mr Kwong's ex-colleagues or classmate at the Hong Kong Polytechnic. We have arranged with the Institute for exempting the annual subscription of Mr Kwong, since 2010 upon reporting of the case of Mr Kwong to the General Council. Under the Bye-law of the Institute, members who are unable to carry on full time practice due to ill health can exempt from paying the annual subscription. Thank Mr Ricky Chan, who pays regular visit to Mr Kwong, for arranging the visit for us.
